A school garden initially used signs to remind students where to return shared tools. The signs reduced the number of tools left beside the beds, but several tools were still placed in the wrong storage box. Instead of adding more signs, the students observed the return process. They found that the labels on two boxes could not be seen while a student was carrying a large watering can. The team moved the labels higher and painted matching symbols on the handles. Misplaced tools then became less common. The project suggests that a reminder can help, yet a physical obstacle may continue to cause errors until the environment itself is changed. The students did not conclude that written reminders were worthless, because the first sign had reduced one kind of mistake. They concluded that different errors could have different causes. A later check showed that new students could also follow the raised labels, which supported the environmental change without proving that it would work in every storage room.
